Yard Sale raises $1000.00 for affordable housing Yard Sale Raises Money for Homes Recently Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys had its forth annual “Big Yard Sale” event and fund raiser. The yard sale raised one thousand dollars in one afternoon, all of which goes directly to Habitat’s building fund. This yard sale is put on by the volunteer staff of Habitat’s HomeStore, which sells gently used and like new donated furniture in support of Habitat’s mission. Store manager Michele Carnahan was responsible for spear heading the planning and coordination of the yard sale. Carnahan and the store volunteers put this event on completely independent of Habitat’s usual fundraisers and it was a great example of how the people and businesses of the Upper Keys support their community. Many yard sale donations came in to the HomeStore in the weeks prior to the event. 1st Baptist Church of Key Largo hosted the yard sale this year. many local Churches and Businesses supported the event which included live music by JonWesley Barnhill, coffee and donuts in the morning and and hotdogs in the afternoon. Supporters included, Publix, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks Coffee, TiB, First State Bank, and First Baptist of Key Largo. “Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys already has two well known fundraisers, its annual Liars and Cheaters Golf Tournament, sponsored by Snappers, and its annual Cocktail party,” Noted Habitat’s executive director Chadwick Duncan. “But the store manager has a goal of bringing enough revenue in through the store to build one house a year, separate from all of our other fundraising. The yard sale is part of the store volunteers’ strategy for making that happen.” Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys is a local nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness in the Upper Keys. Habitat is founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent, affordable place to live in dignity and safety. Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys is an Equal Opportunity Ministry, and has always had a policy of building with people in need regardless of race or religion, and welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds. |
